On October 16th and 17th, the National Urban League partnered with the Educational Testing Service (ETS) to host a convening titled “Changing the Dynamic: A Discussion on Rural-Urban Approaches to Advance Equity for All Students.”

The convening, which falls under the National Urban League’s Equity and Excellence Project, our initiative to improve educational outcomes for underserved students and communities, provided a platform for our partners to elevate challenges that impact student achievement in urban and rural communities face including:

  • How to close the student achievement gaps in rural and urban districts
  • Teacher recruitment and retention
  • Resource disparities and their impact on student outcomes
  • How to build public support for both urban and rural districts

Recurring themes throughout the two days highlighted that when building coalitions, we must be aware of and respect the specific challenges that Rural and Urban Schools face and common areas of need, including access to technology, effective strategies for teacher recruitment and retention, and the value of strong parent-teacher relationships.
